DayZ Review

Being prepared for the coming zombiepocalypse is very serious to us at Quixotic Folly. Dayz is just one of the simulators that we use to train for the impending epidemic. We have a very large following and even have are own server. Like any game that we test, there are several good things and several bad things that follow with each game. no game is perfect, and the comments below are just some of the good, some of the bad, and some of the ugly things that we found in this game. That being said, I will still provide the most objective review that I can.

The Good:

This game has a lot going for it. One of the most fun things about this game is the use of vehicles. But it is not just about finding the vehicle, it is about finding the parts for the vehicle to make it run. This can be a good thing in that it gives you a certain sense of accomplishment when your group is riding around in a ton and a half truck. Furthermore, The implementation of different medical supplies for different injuries is a really innovative and creative addition. If a player doesn’t take care of themself, they will find that it is more difficult to shoot and do other trivial tasks. Another good thing that we find fun about this game is the fact that you have to scavenge for food and supplies. With a large group, this is really fun, especially if you practise military strategy. Lastly, this game has tents which allow for a group of people to start a camp site to store gear and supplies.

The Bad:

This game can be really buggy. And thats on a good day. Some of the vehicles can barely tap a rock and blow sky high, while other vehicles can mow down several trees and keep on driving. Along with several vehicle bugs like these, are character bugs that can cause a large amount of frustration. One in particular is a glitch with the ghillie suits. If a person logs out near a tree or bush while wearing the ghillie suit, they are most likely to spawn in with no gear the next time they log in. There is no fix for this bug, just something that the users have to find out for themselves, and more often than not, they will have to run several hours just to get anywhere without a vehicle. Another large part of this game is the PVP aspect. This can be a very rewarding feature and make you feel good about yourself, or make you want to punch babies with the ferocity of a thousand burning hot suns. One thing makes the PVP in this game not worth it: HACKERS. Hackers ruin this game hands down. Spending hours finding gear is bad enough without having the possibility of having it all taken away in an instant by some script kiddie who gets his jollies off killing someone with little to no effort.

Lastly, this game is a mod. which means that another game is required to play this one. This game is built on Arma II which not a cheap game, especially when you have to buy the expansion as well to play this game. There is a standalone version in the making, but I will believe it when I have more hard data.

The Ugly:

Overall this is a visually aesthetic game with a few exceptions. One being the character models offer little to no customization. and the female characters have even less due largely to the fact that they can not change outfits- which includes ghillie suits.

The UI is overall not that impressive and when an update removed the debug monitor that displayed more detailed vital information, we found that it was difficult to know how long it was going to be until you pass out from lack of blood.

The Summary:
In summary, this game is amazing and is still played by several of the Quixotic Folly community members. Playing in a group is a major bonus to this game, while playing solo has many drawbacks. The shooting is enjoyable and realistic. With the amount of bugs in this game it is more wise to have a buddy that can easily mend broken bones or supply blood when needed. The biggest downside to this game is the hackers that follow with the PVP aspect of this game.
